Deskripsi / Abstrak

Language is far more than a system of words and grammatical structures. It serves as a powerful medium through which individuals express ideas, negotiate meanings, establish relationships, and construct social realities. In an increasingly interconnected world, communication takes place across diverse cultures, communities, and technological platforms, making the study of meaning more relevant than ever. Understanding how meaning is created, interpreted, and negotiated has therefore become a central concern in linguistics and communication studies. This book, Semantics and Pragmatics in Contemporary Communication, explores two fundamental branches of linguistics that are essential for understanding language in use. Semantics focuses on the meanings encoded in words, phrases, and sentences, while pragmatics examines how context, speaker intentions, social relationships, and situational factors influence the interpretation of meaning. Together, these disciplines provide valuable frameworks for analyzing how communication functions in both ordinary interactions and complex social environments. The growing influence of technology and digital media has significantly transformed contemporary communication practices. Social networking platforms, online communities, virtual meetings, and instant messaging applications have introduced new ways of using language that often blur the traditional distinctions between spoken and written discourse. As communication increasingly occurs in digital spaces, semantic and pragmatic perspectives become indispensable for understanding phenomena such as ambiguity, politeness strategies, implicature, identity construction, and the negotiation of meaning across diverse contexts. Recognizing these developments, this book aims to provide readers with both a strong theoretical foundation and practical insights into the study of meaning. The chapters begin with fundamental concepts and key theoretical approaches before progressing to contemporary issues and real-world applications. Through the integration of scholarly perspectives, illustrative examples, and current communication practices, the book seeks to bridge the gap between linguistic theory and everyday language use. This book is intended for students, researchers, educators, and anyone with an interest in language and communication. By engaging with the concepts presented in these chapters, readers are encouraged to develop a deeper understanding of how meaning is constructed, interpreted, and negotiated in various communicative settings. Furthermore, the analytical tools introduced throughout the book may serve as valuable resources for academic inquiry, professional communication, and intercultural interaction.
