The Role of Assessors in Safeguarding Publisher Quality

QRSBN Assessors evaluate publisher governance objectively, independently and on the basis of evidence. These are the principles they work by.

Readers' trust in a book depends on its publisher. In the QRSBN Verified Publisher programme, assessors are the people who check whether a publisher's governance actually works in practice, not just on paper.

How assessors work

  • Objective. Every score must be explainable with evidence, such as documents, sample publications or site-visit findings.
  • Independent. Under the code of ethics, assessors do not assess the publisher they are affiliated with or any publisher with which they have a conflict of interest.
  • Consistent. Each publisher is assessed by two assessors using the same instrument, so results are comparable.
  • Confidential. Publisher data and documents are used only for the assessment.

What is assessed?

Assessors review areas of governance such as legal status and institutional profile, manuscript editing and review, agreements and copyright, production quality, and fulfilment of obligations such as legal deposit. Where needed, assessors conduct an online site visit to confirm the evidence.

Benefits for the ecosystem

Assessment results help publishers see their strengths and what to improve, and give readers, authors and institutions clearer guidance about well-managed publishers.
